Advocacy
“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”
- Malala Yousafzai
In 2015 when working in a village Pat entered a hut and found a mother and her 2 children dying of malnutrion. While his nurse training went worked, he felt like he was living this experience as if it was his own. A remembered Past. When he left the hut, he dropped to his knee and for the first time asked the question why. From this moment on he began his work as an advocate
Mothers First at The United Nations
In 2015, Pat Mc Mahon, founder of Mothers First, took the work on the field to International Advocacy, believing that the International community needed to do more. His voice offers a unique perspective at high-level meetings. One that is deeply immersed in the human experience of extreme poverty matched with a comprehensive understanding of the gaps within Policy Documents which is failing to reach the Furthest Behind.
This speech at the United Nations in 2023 gives an idea of the difficult yet fundamental questions Mothers First is asking to the United Nations.
It is not always easy
Since 2022, Pat has run the Dublin City Marathon barefoot. He does so to show the world that extreme poverty needs to end. As a child, Pat saw the images on the T.V of the famine occurring in Ethiopia in 1984. His tears then have remained the essence of his lifelong work. Twenty years later as a qualified Nurse, he got lost in a slum area in Varanasi India and found a child dying of malnutrition. He gathered her in his arms and founded Mothers First.
World Food Security Meetings Policy Input Papers
The World Food Security meetings are the only intergovernmental platform within the United Nations specifically focused on food security. For the last Number of years, Mothers First has been inputting directly into policy development papers. As the website continues to be updated all submissions will be included.
